Walk
In The Woods
On
a perfect autumn day, about 30 residents of Churchill visited
Bullock
Pens
Park
for a “Walk in the
Woods.” Several of
those attending commented that they didn’t know that Churchill had a
park since its location is a bit “out of the way.” Joan and Milt Gottlieb led a
hike in the woods, pointing out the history and natural features of
the park. Jean Peterson
designed a sheet to help hikers recognize trees along the way.
Sharon
Pedrotti and Sheila Mozer, members of the Churchill Recreation
Board, helped to get the outdoor lunch organized. Following the walk, hot dogs
were roasted by John Mozer. (Why is it that they always taste so
much better when grilled over an open fire?) Everyone said they had
a good time and several said they hoped we would “do it again.”
Since the weather was
just gorgeous, the leaves were a glowing gold, and the company was
so gracious, it was a day to remember fondly.
Next
May 23, the Recreation Board will sponsor a “Community Fix-up the
Park Day” at
Bullock
Pens
Park
to build on the
improvements that have been made to the park thus far. Consider joining in on the
work and the fun!

Halloween
Party
Churchill held its annual Halloween Party in October at the Lou Yagle Room at
the Borough Building. Children from the ages of 3 to 12 enjoyed an afternoon of
games, crafts and treats. As usual, the costumes were fabulous. Pictured are a
few of our many participants. Special thanks to Marti and friends for their
great work on the crafts, to Sharon for the delicious cookie decorating, to Bob
the roving camera man, to the many parents who pitched in to help and to
Sheila, Anna and Iva for their help in setting up. It was a fun day for all
involved.

Churchill
Recreation Board Schedule for Fall, 2008
Churchill has many fine and interesting residents. Unfortunately,
in many instances, they just don’t have the opportunity to meet each other. The
mission of the Churchill Recreation Board is:
“To promote community involvement, interaction, awareness,
and unity within the Borough through planned activities for all ages.”
The Churchill Recreation Board (CRB) is working to plan activities that will
appeal to a wide spectrum of Churchill residents, --- old, young, and
in-betweens, retired and working people, nature lovers and book lovers. If we
have overlooked your group, let us know what kind of activities might appeal to
you and get involved to make them happen. All of the activities need Churchill
residents to volunteer and to participate to make the events successful. Thus
far, the following activities have been planned:
For Those Interested in Carpooling to Lectures:
For the many residents of Churchill who subscribe to either the Drue Heinz
Lecture Series or the Pittsburgh Speakers’ Lecture Series, if you would like to
arrange sharing the trip with other Churchill subscribers, join the “Lecture
Carpool Club” by calling Sheila (See above.) or emailing
smozer@churchillborough.com . Names will be collected and people will
be put in contact with each other to share the trip. Subscribers can then
either take turns driving or the riders who don’t drive can pay for parking or
gas. That way instead of 20 cars driving from Churchill to downtown or Oakland,
perhaps only 10 will make that trip. Plus, you will meet residents with similar
interests as yourself. Think of the interesting discussions on the Parkway East
en route home.
Coming in 2009:
Churchill residents interested in understanding and viewing the wonders of the
night time sky are invited to attend a Star Gazing Evening.
Volunteers with the Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh (one of the
largest such groups in the United States) will discuss astronomy, followed by a
“star party” (weather permitting), at which time residents will be provided the
opportunity to view the heavens through telescopes provided by club members.
The date and site will be announced in a later Churchill newsletter.
April 11 (Saturday) – The annual Bunny Parade will travel
throughout Churchill to dispense candy and treats to the children lining our
streets. A timetable will be published in the Spring Churchill newsletter
announcing the arrival times of the Bunny at each street.
May 23 (Saturday) - A “Community Park Fix-up Day” has been
scheduled to bring our residents together to help make our Bullock Pens Park a
place Churchill can be proud of. Garden Clubs, high school students needing
community service hours, Boy & Girl Scouts, dog-walkers, residents who love
the outdoors, nature, and anyone else who wants to make our environment a
better, greener place. Refreshments will be served to volunteer workers.
Volunteers will be needed to help make all of the above
plans become reality. You can meet some of those really nice people of
Churchill as you work together on a committee and then attend the resulting
event. Helping with an activity would also be an excellent way for Churchill
teens to get acquainted. If you would like to get involved and volunteer for a
CRB event committee, or if you have a question, email
smozer@churchillborough.com . If you don’t have email, call the Borough
Building at (412) 241 - 7113 to leave a message about your interest or your
question.
Keep your eyes open for final details and updates for the 2009 CRB events on the
Churchill website (www.churchillborough.com)*
and in future Churchill newsletters, which will be mailed to your home.
* Make the Churchill website one of your “favorite places” on your computer and
check it out from time to time.
